Between the long three-day weekend, beautiful weather, and endless barbeque invites, what is there not to love about Labor Day? Although I am not the one behind the grill, that task goes to my fiance, I am usually the one planning the menu. Before we have any sort of grilling session, I love turning to Pinterest to see what kinds of new recipes are out there, or even revisiting some of my favorites, with a new twist, looking at you, mayo-free potato salad. After doing a little bit of research, I make my final decisions, put my list together, and off to the store I go to purchase all of the ingredients.
When I get back my other half takes over and cooks or grills them up, we have perfected the tag-team cookout days. For this blog post, I wanted to share with you the recipes that will be on our menu today, some of them are first time tries for us, like the mushroom skewers, and some are fan favorites like the carrot hot dogs. Take a peek below and be sure to add one of these delicious plant-based BBQ recipes to your next cookout:
Normally my go-to appetizers are soup-based, which is my favorite kind of meal! However, during the summer months my guests usually don’t share the same zest I do for a warm bowl of broth (and the cold stuff just doesn’t do it for me). So instead I look for light options that are quick and easy to whip up, like some of the following:
Balsamic Garlic Grilled Mushroom Skewers– Mushrooms are my absolute favorite food and always make it on the menu. In this recipe, instead of using soy sauce, I would opt for Braggs amino acids instead.
Crispy BBQ Roasted Chickpeas- Not every meal at your BBQ needs to be grilled, and these little treats are a great, and tasty, finger food! I would swap out the olive oil for coconut oil in this one.
Herbed Red Potato Salad- It can’t be a real BBQ without the potato salad, right? I really can’t wait to try out this one, especially since it is mayo-free!
Although the packaged veggie burgers and hot dogs are simple to cook, we really try to minimize processed foods in our diet. For that reason you’ll usually see a variation of a “nice dog” and a veggie burger on our menu:
Carrot Hot Dogs- Okay, don’t knock them until you try them! These plant-based alternatives are actually amazing, and with a little spicy mustard and sauerkraut, I am in heaven!
BBQ Tempeh Sandwiches- Tempeh is one of my favorite protein-packed foods, and I love it paired with any sauce, so of course, these guys were going to make it on my menu, slathered in a tangy BBQ sauce. Hands-down these sandwiches are sure to fill you up and be delicious!
Jackfruit Sliders- I don’t know what it is about mini-sized burgers, but I can never pass these little guys up! Especially with jackfruit and barbeque sauce, delish!
Dessert + Drink
When it comes to desserts and drinks I really like to keep it simple, and just go with fruit. Refreshing and sweet, these two recipes are sure to hit the spot:
Summery Fruit Salad- This fruit salad recipe adds a special touch with a citrusy zest and vanilla flavor that is sure to not disappoint!
Watermelon Lemonade- And to wash down all that delicious food? Go easy on yourself and just blend up watermelon and lemon and voila. You have a refreshing drink for your grilling menu!
Now if you excuse me, it’s time for my grocery trip!
Think you will be giving any of these recipes a try? Let me know which one of these sound amazing to you below!
PS- Happy Labor Day!
